PureEV is a Hyderabad based company manufacturing Electric Scooters and Lithium-Ion battery packs. The PluginIndia team recieved the  cute little electric moped called the ETRANCE.
This electric moped does not need licence or registration.

Here are some photos of the PureEV ETRANCE.

Can this cute moped be a practical personal mobility solution?  Read on!

So here is our take on the eTrance electric moped:

Styling & Looks : 2 out of 3

  • [+1] This mocycle got the attention of everybody on both sides of the road wherever we went. So definitely it turns heads. And for small runs single seat, around the locality, it seems perfect. It will also accommodate a pillion but that is not as comfortable.
  • [+1] The suspension is soft and pretty comfortable. It does not scrape the speed breakers either. Only one has to be careful to keep the pedal on the side one is turning in the up position on steep turns when to avoid it scraping the road.
  • [0] The display is nice and large but it does not tell the user how much distance the vehicle will travel on the charge left. It’s what we call a guessometer. The 4 bars shown start to drop very quickly after a certain amount of usage. This needs improvement.

Performance & Ride : 4 out of 5

  • [+1] The motor has 250 W peak power output and will comfortably carry upto 120 kgs.
  • [+1] A smooth pickup and get up to the maximum speed in the mode selected quite effortlessly.
  • [0] Overtaking other slow moving traffic is a bit of a problem. It’s not built for speed. Best to ride slow in the left lane.
  • [+1] The headlight is a bright LED and the turn indicators are loud and draw attention which is good when turning or changing lanes on a crowded street.
  • [+1] Being able to use the accelerator from a full stop (say at a traffic signal), and then continue to pedal along with the help of pedal assist is a very good option.
Picture

Efficiency & Range : 3 out of 4

  • [+1] The battery pack is a 1 kWh, NMC based chemistry. It has a cute pencil box shape and has a real world range of upto 60 to 70 Km to a charge.
  • [0]  Adding a pillion rider can slow the bike down and will definitely affect the range.
  • [+1]We took it from Santacruz to South Mumbai and back (54 km) and found the experience to be quite a lot of fun. Though one would not do this everyday.
  • [+1]  Having pedals is a big plus. It allows one to be totally free or range anxiety. Most people I spoke to said it made all the difference to them to know that if ever they were stuck they could just pedal home.
Picture

Charging : 2 out of 3

  • [+1] It should take about 1 to 2 hours for a full charge.
  • [+1]  It’s quite easy to charge it. The battery can even be removed and taken to one’s home or office to charge.
  • [0] There is no quick charge feature.

Pricing and Availability : 1 out of 1

  • [+1] The price of INR 51,999/- is affordable if you compare it to a petrol scooters, but for the sheer relaxation and utility it’s worth it.
    • Currently available online. URL: https://pureev.in/product/etrance

Extra Features : 3 out of 4

  • [+1] Removable battery.
  • [+1] Side stand sensor so vehicle does not move when one puts down the side stand. However there is no sensor on the main stand which means you can take it off the main stand while sitting on the bike and accelerating.
  • [+1]It has an anti-theft feature on the key fob.
  • [0] Does not have regenerative braking.
  • For more details, do check out the Specs Sheet at URL: https://pureev.b-cdn.net/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/ETRANCE-1.pdf .

Long Term Ownership Details : 2 out of 2

  • [+1] The battery should last 4 to 5 years, or 800 to 1000 charge cycles.
    •  A spare battery (in increase range), or replacement battery to replace the worn out one would cost INR 19,800/- + GST.
  • [+1] Per charge the cost of electricity would be INR 6/- as it stores 1 unit of electricity

Final thoughts

This delightful little eBike seems to defy all categorization. It’s heavier than a cycle, and it’s powered, it’s lighter than a scooter, or a motorcycle. You can pedal, get a pedal assist, or just squeeze the accelerator and zip along. I guess it allows us to experience an inbetween category, the mocycle!

As always ride safe and always wear a helmet!  Over and Out!
