Chennai - Coimbatore on an electric car
In this week’s episode, we will talk about driving your electric car between Chennai on the east coast and the western city of Coimbatore which is the gateway to Kerala. The Charge Point Operators operation between the two cities are - Zeon Charging, who have completely electrified the highway and Tata Power who have only partially added charging stations in this route.

The EV Drive
Let’s talk about your electric car drive between Chennai and Coimbatore. This is our recommended guide for cars like Tata Nexon EV, Tigor EV, MG ZS EV, etc.

From Chennai, hit the road and get on Highway 32 and drive for 121 km. There are no major hills on this drive, so you can easily cover this stretch until you reach your first stop - The Zeon Fast Charger just before the town of Tindivanam, which charges at 50 kW and has a CCS2 plug
- All you need to do is to top up the charge for 30 minutes. Use the Zeon app/RFID tag and start charging
- There are restaurants like - Adayar Ananda Bhavan to eat while your car charges

Once done charging, drive and merge onto highway 38 until you reach The Zeon Fast Charger just before the town of Ulundurpet
- All you need to do is to top up the charge for 20 minutes
- There is Cafe Udupi ruchi & A2B veg restaurants

Next, get on highway 38 and highway 79, drive for 89 km and reach the Zeon Charging Station near Attur. All these Zeon charging stations have 50 kW chargers and have a CCS2 plug.
- There are restaurants like - Adayar Ananda Bhavan veg restaurant and Junior kuppanna Non veg restaurant to eat while your car charges.
- The charger is averaging 5 stars out of 5 in Google. Read some reviews here

Once done charging, drive and merge onto highway 544 until you reach The Zeon Fast Charger just before the town of Sankari
- All you need to do is to top up the charge for 20 minutes
- There is a Sree Saravana Bhavan restaurant nearby
- This charging station is having a lounge to work with your laptop of take some rest while car is charging.

Next, Continue on highway 544 and drive for 95 km and reach the Zeon Charging Station near Avinashi.
- A quick 15 minute top up is all you need to reach your final destination Coimbatore.
- There is a hotel called Shree Annapurna at the premises for a quick snack.
- You can take diversion from here to Ooty , full charge here will take you comfortably to Ooty.

If you use a petrol car, you would spend 9 hours driving and take three breaks of 20 min each which is around of 1 hour = 10 hours to reach Coimbatore. If you use an EV, you would spend 9 hours driving and use 1 hour 45 min for charging the car and yourself = 10 hours 45 min to reach Coimbatore. The additional time in an electric car is 45 mins compared to an ICE car, which is not bad at all.
Costs
If you use a petrol car, the petrol costs would be around Rs 4000. If you use an electric car, the charging costs would be around Rs 800. You enjoy massive savings of Rs 3200 with an electric car.

The only mobile apps you will need for this journey are the Zeon Charging, Relux and the Tata Power EZ Charge
Slow Charging
Which locations have slow AC charging facilities? Most Zeon locations have a type 2 AC plug and 15 amp socket, so if you arrive late and a car is charging, you can use the 15 amp socket or the type 2 plug.
