The Cobalt mining FUD (Fear, Uncertainty, Doubt) created by some paid media organizations and random YouTube channels is very easy to debunk. That is because, simple facts are either misrepresented or purposely hidden to promote their narrative.
In this article, we will document some important facts that debunk this narrative with facts and sources.

Cobalt FUD
Yes, Cobalt Mining is bad for the environment and bad for the people who live near these mines. [1] No EV Owner denies this.
But EV haters or Petrol heads, don’t mention four important facts regarding Cobalt
Atrocities of the OIL industry
EV FUD creators cry about Lithium or Cobalt battery manufacturing and conveniently don't talk about the terrible practices by the oil industry. Here is the thing, the human and environmental issues are amplified 100X when we extract petroleum from the ground. According to Oil Change International (OCI), the two most widely known cases by the oil industry are when they committed genocide in the Niger Delta just to get the people off the land, so that they can extract the petroleum. And when the oil industry built pipelines in Burma, there were forced relocation, forced labor, torture, and murder [6]
Accidents, and oil spillages cause huge environmental destruction and this happens every year. In the immediate aftermath of an oil disaster, the effects on fish, sea birds, and other marine animals are often very visible. Coated in oil, animals can be killed by poisoning or suffocation. In 2010, the Deepwater Horizon slick [7] in the Gulf of Mexico became the largest ever marine oil spill in US history, with more than 134 million gallons of oil spilling into the ocean. More than a decade on, scientists have shown the impact is far longer lasting than many expected.
The environment impact by the OIL industry is incomparable compared to any battery manufacturing.
We don't see these so-called auto journalists talk about the atrocities committed by the OIL industry.
Our only plea to you is to listen to scientists and research papers rather than random YouTubers, Whatsapp university and paid anti EV Media.

But EV haters or Petrol heads, don’t mention four important facts regarding Cobalt
- Mining Cobalt for battery cells that last 10-15 years is a one time process and is way better for the environment compared to extracting, drilling, transporting, refining Oil for 8 to 10 years during the life of a vehicle [2]
- Lithium-Iron-Phosphate Battery & Sodium Ion Battery Packs: 98+% of the Indian electric car market in 2023 uses LFP packs and two wheelers, three wheelers will use LFP and Sodium-Ion battery packs. These packs use ZERO Cobalt and ZERO Nickel [3]
- The petrol heads are not in a position to take any sort of moral high ground on the Cobalt issue. This is due to the fact cobalt is used to extract sulfur during the refining of crude oil. Good luck recycling that Cobalt into anything. [4]
- 95% of Cobalt in battery packs are recycled. [5]
