By Kamlesh Mallick
The Pune EV community decided to get their electric cars, which are available in the Indian market and do a range test on a highway from Pune to Lonavala - a distance of 52 km.
We tested the Classic e2o vs e2o 120 vs e2o Plus P6 vs e2o Plus P8.

The objective of the drive was to :
  • Find the efficiency on a real world drive, among the different electric cars in the Indian market
  • Compare the readings between the classic e2o and the newer Mahindra Electric e2o Plus models
  • Do a highway test, and drive normally with AC on.  No baby sitting or trying to drive efficiently!  Just step on it!
  • Compare the readings between the new Mahindra e2o Plus P6 vs the e2o Plus P8 (as these are the only electric cars sold as the classic e2o is not sold anymore)
The cars
  • Classic Mahindra Reva e2o - Yellow - Range : 100 km
  • Mahindra Reva e2o - White - Range : 120 km
  • Mahindra Reva e2o - Silver - Range : 120 km (with upgraded tyres)
  • Classic Mahindra Reva e2o - Silver - Range : 90 km (unique)
  • Mahindra e2o Plus P6 - White - Range : 110 km
  • Mahindra e2o Plus P6 - White - Range : 110 km

Final Words
The classic e2o created by Mr Chetan Maini's team is a terrific electric car. It is reliable in terms of the range achieved - every single trip.
The same cannot be said of the newer electric cars - The Mahindra e2o Plus P6 and P8
Mahindra's corporate decision to get rid of the e2o classic electric car and introduce models that are inferior to the predecessor,
in terms of efficiency, is baffling.
Why not sell the e2o 100 and e2o 120 km variants at a cheaper price?

Anyway , hope this was useful to you guys. Do comment below or in the YouTube video on your thoughts and feelings.

If possible, kindly let us know about real world range for complete 100% charge.

The classic e2o had very predictable range of 120 km per charge with 10% drain due to AC.

the e2o Plus P6 is delivering on average 95 km and P8 is delivering 120 km per charge - based on our observations with users.

what about p4?

I recently bought a e2o P6!
What a disappointment! And now moreso, to read here that the earlier model, made 4 or 5 years earlier had better range.
I have been in contact with their Customer Care where I have asked:

a) Give me range....cut every unnecessary service.
b) When will the software be updated?
c) Why can't I select the Economy Mode. I read the Manual
d) Why do I lose a whopping 3% SOC per day? Put my car to sleep.
e) Why can't I use the flats generator for charging?
f) What do I do if I live on the 5th floor?
g) Why can't I use a small portable petrol generator, to retain my peace of mind?
h) WHEN will I get an answer to the above questions, so I can ask further questions?

Two months have passed. I am promised that the points given will be taken up with the Technical and Plant Teams.

We sympathize with your situation.
We are in touch with many Mahindra electric car users all over India and we understand that there has not been any major software update over 4+ years for the e2o.
Unfortunately Mahindra is still thinking like a traditional auto company, while EV's are crying out lout for over the air software updates that can make your car better as it ages.

So dont expect software updates anytime soon.

We have asked some other e2o Plus P6 users to respond to your other queries. Mahindra never responds to public forums anyway due to their corporate policies.

Regarding apartments and living in the 5th floor, all you need to do is connect your meter to the parking lot. Any electrician can do it.

Do keep us posted on any news from the company.

First, let me thank you and PlugInIndia for the excellent initiative shown in conducting this shootout.
Thank you also for the sympathies, although it is more in order to offer condolences!
My own test runs, were covered individually and over a shorter two-way distance, much before I came across this article and video, reveal almost identical figures. I am unfortunate enough to have purchased the worst performer in the bunch, viz., the e2o P6.
Your analysis of the shootout is invaluable, pinpointing the key item, the tyres, as causing the 19% loss in SOC. This was not covered in my earlier list of queries that can now be added.
My first action therefore, after posting here, is to write to Customer Care requesting them to change the tires, even offering to pay the difference in cost, as the car has done about 400km.
Customer Care is extremely slow in meaningful responses and action, which I feel should be taken more on a war footing, now the EV age is upon us.
I am therefore going to request them to take me on a round trip test drive to Bangalore Airport (just under 80 km round trip) using their best electric car test driver so that we can bust the myth on the advertised range given in the Sales Brochures.
I may have missed it, but I did not hear, or see in the stats given, the average speeds in the legs. Gratedul if someone would be kind enough to enlighten me?
I am also, FWIW, sending the url of this video to the Head, Customer Care. All these issues need to be addressed to persons who must make sure the they reach top management of Mahindra. If the top management of Mahindra places Customer Satisfaction high on its list of Company Goals!
The alternative is that we get together and do it. Again, I thank you for getting in touch with other e2o owners, All India.
Please count me in.

Thanks for your comment.
The average speed was 55-60 kmph.

Yes we are in touch with many e2o Plus P6 users and they are not happy.

Thank you, Kamlesh. that's a pretty good pace!
As mentioned I have requested Mahindra CustCare to conduct a Test Drive, where I will be aboard, and we are arranging a route that will be roughly, a 50KM return run(100km+).,

I am copying below the relevant letter to them. This is to ensure that we are all on the same page when it comes to demanding servic.:
Letter to Mahindra CC:
"Thank you for your letter and the very long time you spent discussing various e2o issues with me. Only good can come from such frank interaction. I am very glad to hear that the issue of 3% SOC loss per day has been taken seriously, and you are looking at your modules to try to reduce losses to the 2% or 3% per MONTH, if I was able to hibernate my systems when the car is not used.

I had, in fact requested a Test Drive by your expert Test Driver of my e2oP6, so that I can be satisfied I am getting the range that has been advertised by Mahindra in the e2o Brochures and Manuals. I would definitely like to discuss the broad modalities with Mr Dilip, but the details with the test driver himself. I hope we can fully document the exercise. All will be done under advice to you.

Please ask Mr Dilip to get in touch.

Subsequent to the test drive, I would be really pleased if you could agree to allow me to replace the existing 'Continental' Make Radial Tubeless tires with the appropriate size Yokohama tires, as a special case, (without cost to me, best!). However I am willing to pay the cost difference if Mahindra cannot do the replacement free of cost. I have done 400km or so.

The objective of this exercise, I think, would be of immense benefit to Mahindra. The identical Test Run could be made with the replacement Yokohama tires to evaluate the difference in range performance. Incidentally, you had mentioned that 'Apollo' Tyres were fitted. (Another cost cutting measure, at the cost of performance? Please check it out. All details on the net.).

I don't think you will find too many Customers who would offer to do all this, or to take the trouble to feed you back in so much detail, as I have done. Some reciprocation from your side would be highly appreciated.

While your Team is evaluating and checking out each module, please check back on my detailed feedback letters One and Two.

In these letters I have asked questions, (and here again, I am prepared to be your 'guinea pig'), as to whether a flat's diesel generator can be used in case of KEB failure. Even more important.... I would purchase a recommended (or, recommend myself, if you like!) a small petrol onboard or offboard generator, with the appropriate output, and +/- 3-5% voltage and frequency regulation at the reqd current output. My limited study of your charging system shows that you already have adequate built in safeguards on board the car to take care of any abnormal supply variations. It must,....... just consider the 'dirty' state supply in many parts of the country.

My next question. logically, would be, of course, to look at the possibility of charging via the same onboard generator, while simultaneously, running the car.
Easy job, if you think of diverting the regenerative braking system current feeding the batteries, to an input from a different DC source. Not having access to your systems' schematics, I can only reasonably conjecture, but the conjectures are all technically sound, please note!

I'm sure all the above can be done in parallel with your module study. To put an electrical spin on it, you will agree that we can work in parallel, rather than series on unconnected issues. This is the only way many issues can be addressed simultaneously, and, in a reasonable period of time.

Regards,

And his reply follows:

Thank you once again for your valuable feedback shared over email and phone during our discussion.

As informed all feedback collected from you has been shared with our Strategy Team for their perusal and feasibility analysis. However we are unable to give any timeline commitment as it involves thorough study of every module.

As discussed request you to kindly confirm your appointment for drive test to check the range of car so that our Dealer Manager Mr Dilip will co-ordinate with you and do the needful.

Regards" END OF LETTERS.

As you will gather, I have wasted no time in making my displeasure very clear, but also in a positive manner, giving Mahindra every opportunity to address long overdue issues. I feel a few crusaders are called for to put pressure on the company to justify their claims.

You may have noted that I have mentioned the "two earliest letters" sent to Customer Care about two months ago. If interest is shown I can add these two initial letters specifying my complaints/suggestions. I think its essential that we Customers see eye to eye on what I consider to be pretty glaring issues.
Thanks for your attention.

PLEASE DO NOT BUY THE 4-Door E2O PLUS. I had the earlier 2-door E2O as well and that was super. However, the 4-door E2O Plus is the worst decision you could make. The car is fine but the music and the radio system is SHIT!

1. You start listening to the radio and the channels change by themselves... every minute! Imagine listening to a song on one channel in the car radio and in 10 seconds the channel changes and just keeps scrambling. You go back to the channel again, but in another 10 seconds, it changes again! Happens every few seconds... forget about listening to the radio in peace while driving.

2. The music/radio system is somehow (and for reason’s unknown to anyone) connected to the horn. So while listening to the radio, if you happen to horn, then it changes and starts playing the music from the USB and vice versa! No peace there either, can’t horn without disturbing the music flow.

3. The touch screen for the music and all other things are shit as well. Soooo difficult to choose what you want to choose, whether channel, whether phone number, whether connecting Bluetooth etc. The E2O team is hell bent on making the consumer’s life difficult.

4. Forget about connecting your Bluetooth or wifi to the car... doesn’t happen. Just doesn’t. Even their own customer rep couldn’t do it when I showed the problem to him!

5. Forget about talking to anyone on the car speaker phone because no one on the other end can hear you! The volume is abnormally low. This was tested by their customer rep and even he was like yes ma’am I can’t hear anything.

All these problems have been there from the day I bought the car and have sent emails, Whatsapp messages, video proofs etc to the E2O team... but without any avail. Apparently they can’t do anything because the music/radio system is screwed for all E2O Plus cars that have been produced and sold! So there, that’s it!

And yes, if you think all this is distracting while driving... you are right! I actually had a small accident when I got startled when the radio channel changed by itself.

Paying more than 8 lacs for a car that doesn’t even get its basics right... UNACCEPTABLE.

Too too too many issues... Do yourself a favour, buy any other car, don’t buy the E2O Plus.

(I’ve got several video proof and mails to prove everything I’m talking about.
All these issues are genuine & persistent. I am ready to share with any media house with all the proof if interested.)
