Yes I know it's not an electric blue color, but this is my electric car and “teal Blue” color so that’s the name I’ll go with !
Finally after waiting for over 6 months I got my car in the beginning of this month and have done just over a 1000 kms, so writing my first feedback and experience of the car.
First let me share the pre delivery experience. The moment I heard the bookings are open and the car is announced, I was one of the first to book! TML guys were quite helpful and guided me during the entire period from booking till delivery.
Booked way back in December a few days after the launch of the car; the first test drive was on 26th Jan!
Really enjoyed the short test drive, and then got to do 2 more test drives one in heavy traffic and see the battery drain with a/c ; other with very less traffic for about 40 kms and it was a really smooth experience.
TATA Power installed the charging point with the neat Legrand waterproof box. Maybe a smart meter can be part of it?
Would be better than buying a smart plug!

Ok, now Delivery day! Got the car with ODO of 27 kms, spotted some scratches on the door and promptly got it noted in the delivery documents, unfortunately have not got the wrist band till today even after nearly a month of the delivery. But I heard its just a sensor and not a smart watch, well if we are paying so much, maybe TML needs to give an option charge a little more and at least put in a smart watch in the sensor, it will be more appealing and we don’t need to wear a watch then!

Ok, so I drove from the dealership to my home. 40 kms was at 98% charge when I picked up the car and left with 77% when I reached home!
Had office the next day and covered 90 kms with this. Left with 35%. Some things which I observed, we haven’t gone below 119 Wh/km with traffic, without traffic, mostly in morning and evenings. Sometimes if you are not careful, while driving the gear rotation when you move from S to D, you may accidentally go to N and it works!!! No protection? Due to regenerative braking the car slows down considerably, so when that happens shouldn’t the brake lights turn on? since the car is de-accelerating quickly and drivers behind us may not realize the fact that we have regen; which could cause a mishap! Fact: if you are above 95% SOC...there is no regenerative braking, take care!

Explored the touchscreen integrated display and music system, Android and Apple both supported! works pretty well with Android auto, since integration with google maps. Apple car play works with apple maps which is still not as good as android!
Nice integration with music apps (spotify, amazon music etc.) and can read out your SMS and WhatsApp messages too!

So in the evening I did my first charge cycle overnight! Have some issues due to repair work going on in our apartment complex, so it’s a bit tricky at the moment to get to the exact right spot to be able to plug in!
Looking to get some better charging infrastructure installed, working with TATA power. Will share more details when I have some updates.

Ok, so 1 week office to home and home to office, charging and discharging 2 cycles, got 220 max till now on full charge. Charged with heavy rainfall one night and seems IP67 rating is good, as it did not damage anything!
Tried to charge at a relative's place, and the charging indicator showed 4th light red which means earthing problem, so I immediately disconnected! And the gun wouldn’t come out from the car; but we got good guidance from TML Service Manager and he told us 2 options which are easy and we can try and the gun will get released, and if it still doesn’t, there is a manual switch but it’s a bit tricky and your last resort, he seemed quite helpful and offered to guide us even if it was late in the evening if the 1st 2 options don’t work. We were lucky that a simple power on and 1 minute wait worked for us!!

Next day I planned to do a fast charge, so went to Connaught Place; where there are many EESL chargers; went to all, either they are OFF or there were not CCS2 connectors…finally gave up and thought better to return home while I still have some SOC! Range anxiety kicked in….12% and 10 kms to reach home, A/c switched off, a bit of sunroof opened for some air and blower without air conditioner…crawl mode started, speed limited to 50 kmph, nearly home .. finally entered my building at 5% SOC and started charging!
Picture
Picture
The app took a few days to get started, yes it has some of the features advertised, but navigation-> opens up google maps or apple maps! And you have to manually END A trip in the app even if google map ends the trip. All trips which you make and don’t set up in the app, are “unplanned trips” how and when the driving score gets calculated…NO IDEA…it happens for some and for some it doesn’t show, so I think a lot of work is needed on the app.
On iOS the app crashes every time I click on weather. But Android is OK. Quite slow to start especially with the graphics of drawing a car when you open the app. Sometimes the unlock gives an error and on 2-3 tries it works. Would be useful to have some features like ODO / Trip A / Trip B readings in the app;
Oh, there is a different app to control the air conditioner and the music system, would it be even better to merge the 2 into the same app maybe? Oh, what's this? Tata Power EV Charging Beta…so there is a list of charging stations in the main connected Zconnect app…so why this?
Too many apps!!!

One last thing before i sign off, Tata Motors guys are more involved in the whole process, i never even talked to the sales guy in the entire period, and they are quite helpful in coordinating with Tata Power, dealer, and any queries we have related to technical topics or sales topics...so definitely if you plan to buy speak to a Tata Motors person!!!
Ok, so far so good, will keep you posted after 5K!

Electric Vehicle Charging at Apartments?  No Problem
Here are some photos of my charge point. Pardon the construction activity happening at my apartment.
The wire from the Legrand box is going from my meter to my home so we joined it from our meter output.
Since our discom is TATA POWER so it was easier...and less consideration of any objections by the discom later.

DC Fast Charging Testing!
July 31st
I wanted to test the DC Fast charging capacity of the Nexon EV.  For those who don't know, the Nexon EV can take AC and DC power to charge the battery. AC charging is done at homes.
DC Charging sends current directly to the battery and this is faster charger.
Today, I visited the Plugngo charger at Patparganj delhi ! Not working !! It’s inside a MCD area ... gated so EV public parking shouldn’t be a problem! They even have a sofa inside while you wait!
But chargers are switched off! Plugngo app scanned the QR code and showed the options I want to choose for time / units / amount ... and enter OTP but OTP never came... their LCDs seem OFF and they MCD staff said it was working 2/3 days ago but maybe MCB is down ..
Will try again soon!
Picture
Trying my best!!!!
Picture
August 3rd - SUCCESS
My second fast charge test ! This one east Delhi in plugNgoApp! Charged for 2 units @ Rs 10 and above that is free... 😄😄😆😆 . Much better experience than last time I went it was all OFF!
And now they even have an attendant... to help people ... maybe my tweet to Mr Sisodia made an impact? As he had inaugurated this site.
Much better than lying EESL 33 rupees per unit!!

Nice blog Vivek.
Thanks for sharing.

I did not know , Nexon EV customers gets a smart watch for keyless entry!
Driving in 'N' is not recommended! Its strange though.

I too like the idea of rear tail lights turning on when there is Regen happening.

Very nice to know charging in rain is not an issue with the Nexon EV
I agree there should just be 1 app for entire Tata EV ecosystem.

Congratulations and look forward to more updates!

The watch is actually a wrist band, and its purpose is actually to allow one to go swimming without having to worry about losing the key in the river/sea/pond/lake etc and also the key fob is not water proof...

The intention was never for it to be a watch...though as per Tata universe concept, they could ask Titan to upgrade the band to a watch!

Thank you for the review Vivek. Looks to me that some issues still need to be sorted out with the car. The two issues that you have raised i.e. D to N and selective regenerative braking are valid safety issues. Looks like Tata have to do lots of work on software front as well.

It was definitely a wise decision to switch over to an electric car although it took quite some time. It is a no sound car with myriad features which we r still exploring. The voice command feature is really good and the fader and balance effect which is controlled by the touch screen of the music system makes the ride more enjoyable.

Why don't you also write a blog detailing your experience as a nexon ev owner ? Since its the first serious attempt at a ecar in India, in the non luxury range , their is a lot of interest.

A good review Vivek. While much can be discounted to the fact that both, car's model and technology, are new, currently I see there are challenges of too many handling and control points that may annoy the car owner, generally. These factored units and incompatibilities will dissuade a new buyer. Running low on battery while driving back home instance lead me thinking if battery can be relied upon 100% because many a times electric equipments start shutting unpredictably while running low on power. Disjointed apps, rather is the biggest concern after putting the hardware and CS well. The concern is able to kill the whole experience as one operates with different layouts, terminologies, interface controls etc. It shows that TML did no think that part through.

Overall seem like a fine experience so far. I will. Not comment on economies of mileage with 220 km per charge. I've my reservations around that.

Nice review. Since some other owners have faced moisture issues , resulting in the car stalling in traffic, why not take a trip to the tata workshop and getting the anti moisture treatment done as a preemptive measure. Also a good idea to put a few dessicant packets in the areas where moisture can effect electronics, Though talk to the tata people before doing so.

You have to be very careful when using dessicants. They are a solution as long as they absorb moisture. But once they are loaded, they become a cause for problems.

Very well written review. Tata motors has moved way forward but dealers have yet to catch-up with technology advancement. They are still living in Indica Indigo era. However in the prevailing circumstances I would prefer an indian make than a foreign make. I was in a dilemma whether to go for fossil fuel or EV . I am clear what to do now.

Very well written Vivek. You have covered a lot of points for concern.
Do also give your experience of how comfortable the car is, especially the seats.
What is the quality of the music system, both from the point of sound quality and convenience of usage.
How effective is the air conditioner, especially when finding a balance between comfort and minimising the battery consumption.
Do the Tata people suggest that you should charge only after the SOC is below say 25%, or can charging be done even if the SOC is above 50% so that slow charging can easily be done at night when it's cooler and time is available.
Sorry to ask so many questions, but would be very helpful to know about these also.
Cheers.

Very elaborate and detailed review. The safety issues should be addressed by the Manufacturer at the highest priority. The overall charging infra has come a long way and will gradually improve as more customers adapt to EV...for customers travelling long distance in NCR, the comfort will come only when they see more such EV's on the road, thanks to early adapters like you.

Dear Rahul, thanks for your kind comments, yes the Indian EV industry has moved considerably since the first home grown Reva...but we have been looking at 2020 as a year when 3 major brands have come into the market and TATA seems to have the most pomising one! FYI : there are many early adapters who went for Reva, Mahindra e2o, e-verito and e-tigor...and they have had a huge contribution to the Indian EV plans. LEts hope TATA and other serious players keep the momentum up!

Good to know about touchscreen facilities available on the go, like google map, music apps n message box of WhatsApp for both - Android n Apple.

Agree with you if TML have provided for built in smart watch. Provision of additonal parallel screen with a Remote control device for back seat passengers can be an added glamour for next version, if not already provided.

For those who wish now or plan in future to upgrade to EV version, catching up with trendy info, will keep them updated on EV.
