Volta ZAP - India's first crossover e-Bike

27/8/2016

VOLTA Motors is an evolving automotive Chennai-based start-up company focused on developing sustainable Electric vehicles for the Indian and global market.
Volta Motors has designed and developed India’s first cross-over electric bike VOLTA ZAP, completely in Chennai
. Volta Motors’ first product “ZAP” is an innovative eco-friendly vehicle that can be used like a moped for commuting and also be used as a bicycle for fitness purpose. Inside and out, Volta Zap is an iconic and bold Indian product representing the MAKE IN INDIA strategy. Volta Motors have designed ZAP to be more reliable and durable considering Indian road and climatic conditions.
Picture
The battery used in ZAP is an advanced lithium technology which is the first of its kind in an Indian e-bike. Volta ZAP’s battery has eight times more life span than any existing
E-bike in the Indian market. The battery has twice the lifespan than any e-bike with similar specifications. The Pedal assist feature helps the user to pedal the bike with an ease as it gives 3 full cycle wheel rotation for every single pedal rotation made. The reflector placed underneath the seat post of the bike adds an additional safety feature during night rides.

Volta Zap’s operating cost is around 7 paise per kilometre, which is more economical when compared with existing two-wheelers and this proves to be the most reliable product in terms of usage in India. The specially designed battery pack weighs around 3 kg. The battery pack is designed in such a way that it can be easily removed and charged anywhere. ZAP’s battery can also be used as a power bank for charging mobile phones, laptops, tablets, etc... on the go. The time consumed for charging ZAP’s battery is quicker than any existing E-bikes in the country (four times faster).

Volta ZAP has been presented in various start-up events and fests in cities like Chennai, Mumbai, Bangalore and Vijayawada and received a lot of applause from industry experts and users. Volta Motors has been testing ZAP for more than a year and have been continuously improving the product quality. Volta has been offering test rides for users and taking feedbacks to refine and improvise the vehicle. ZAP was recently unfolded at Bangalore during the 1st week of August 2016 and has offered more than 300 test drives successfully. Volta Motors has been receiving pre-orders for Volta ZAP from various parts of the country.

Volta Motors has been certified as a recognized start-up by the department of industrial policy and promotion under start-up India portal promoted by the Central government of India which adds more value towards the brand.

Picture
Volta ZAP was showcased before the honorable Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, Mr.Chandrababu Naidu. ZAP has received applause from the Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh and also got tremendous positive feedbacks from the government officials who have test driven ZAP.

Volta has started taking pre-orders for Volta ZAP. Many users have pre-ordered Zap after their test rides. Volta Motors has plans to offer ZAP for the best cost to those who pre-order it. Volta Motors is working to organize free test rides for users in tier 1 and tier 2 cities all over India in the coming days. Interested users can sign up for free test rides on www.voltamotors.in

Aren't you tired of repeating statements without any substance? "2 times, 8 times, 4 times"? What are you multiplying? ZERO!
Let the company give a clear statement - battery provides x kWh capacity, has xxx manufacturer's cycle life promise (I won't say guarantee); it is sold with x kW charger that lets it to be recharged in y hours.
Clear and benchmarkable. Anything else is a pure BS!

Hi Q,

We understand that without giving us specifications, we just have to trust what the company says.

Having said that, this was a press release by Volta Motors.

We will be doing Previews and Reviews of the Zap soon at PluginIndia. More details will come soon.

But i have asked the company to share more Specification info with us and will update them here once received.

Thanks,
Kamlesh

Hey Q,

First try to put your real name and start commenting. The article says it is just a press release (like teaser) and not a product launch. Let's wait for the E-bike to get launched and wait for specs.

This looks good good compared to Hulikkal e-Cycles or Spero.

I like the way the battery has been integrated with the frame.
But am a purist, i would prefer to have a horizontal bar like a cycle.

I would rather prefer to ride a cycle than something that feels like a moped. Luna anyone?

But i will reserve judgement until i try it out.

@PluginIndia - Do ask the company to share specification details soon!

Best
Sateesh

Hi Volta,

Congratulations on the new idea.

Can you inform me, if the frame material is Steel or Alloy?
I would prefer alloy frames as i would want my e-Cycle to be as light as possible.
I hope an alloy option is provided.

Well designed bike… at least its not a copy paste.

They should develop this cycle into a motorcycle because the price and performance difference is so close that it makes more sense to make motorcycle than to build a electric cycle. Because to keep it as a cycle they have to try to keep it light but to bear the heaviness of the motor+controller + battery +accessories will require bigger, fatter rims and tires.

But is that a hub-motor? Seriously??… its time to move from the “time-pass” hub-motors to the serious chain drive which can pull more powerfully over inclines & flyovers.

Design comments:
1. “The reflector placed underneath the seat post of the bike” Seriously hope it is not only a “reflector” but a led light that lights up on braking. If it doesn’t light up on braking then it is a major safety hazard.
2. The reflector/brake-light must be on the mudguard or rear of the carrier.
3. Side stand must be more professional/heavyduty.
4. No Rear disc brakes?
5. Replace hub-motor with chain drive.
6. There is no need for multiple gears for electric bikes. It should have only 2 Option: either gear-less-manual or motorized. Regen on such a light bike is not much… especially with a hub-motor.
7. The image says “Dual Ride Commuter” probably meaning rider+passenger… if so then the carrier is not displayed and left to the imagination.
8. It doesn't make much sense to harp so much on “smart phone connectivity”, Apps connectivity, rider diagnostics, intelligent vehicle etc. It would only make sense if they plan to go into developing an electric car where the AI can detect human flaws like falling asleep, objects crossing its path, turning headlights, infrared vision to see through darkness or dense fog, follow other car in front etc.

But if they want to really turn heads it would make sense to make it a fat-bike by incorporating Wide rims and fat tires…

They should also showcase their audio-video footage on some exhibition stall screen and make a noise. If they don't have ANY (as I am sure) do so ASAP!!! Display at ANY Expo... Electronics, Solar, Agricultural or Real Estate... Start catching eyeballs... but then need fat tires ;-)

I really dont care if they shown it to Chandrababu Naidu or Kejriwal or Modi... get it at multiple exhibitions ASAP....

And dudes at Volta STOP politicians from test-riding your bikes get some real credibility by NOT using or referring to them... Your target is the X & Y generation not 50yr old guys... pay some stunt riders like "Anam (Stunts) Hashim" to test ride your bike... and listen to her opinion... the footage itself will make a HUGE difference...

Is this an Indian made e-cycle or is the technology borrowed from some foreign manufacturer? Why I ask is because every time I search for Volatmotors.in, I am taken to the Tronx website.

Is the Volta Zap available in larger frame sizes of 21" and 24" to suit taller people like 6' plus?

Likewise, are there options for larger wheel sizes of 27.5" and 29"

can the saddle and handlebar be raised to accommodate taller riders?

Is there an option to choose a larger battery capacity to increase range?

What about regenerative braking, recharging while pedaling?

Do we have the option of 21 manual gears?

Indians require a affordable and durable e cycle,, it should have front and back baskets preferably lockable, mainly the existing normal cycle with battery is better, design in ladies cycle with all e cycle items may be a fortune for the manufacturer,,
Many cycles don't have back and front mud gaurds,no grocery , vegetables baskets, hope anybody makes the e cycle in a lower budget, for sure it will sell more than a million in India,, Thanks
