Bajaj Auto has signed an agreement with the Maharashtra government to set up a manufacturing facility. As part of the agreement, Bajaj will invest Rs 650 crore for the plant in Chakan, near Pune city.
Bajaj said that the Maharashtra government will help Bajaj Auto in obtaining necessary permissions, registrations, approvals, clearances and fiscal incentives.
"This further reinforces the commitment of Bajaj to Maharashtra where the journey began. And it is being done in a year when Bajaj Auto celebrates its 75th anniversary", said the statement. The plant, which will have a capacity to build up to a million vehicles a year, would make premium motorcycles under the KTM, Husqvarna and Triumph brands. The plant will also manufacture electric scooters like the Chetak. The plant is scheduled to open by the second half of FY2022-23. This plant will boost the output of Chetak e-scooter in 2021 and beyond. Bajaj manufactures the Chetak in its existing plant in Chakan and has sold more than 900 units of the Chetak electric scooter as of mid Jan 2021. Bajaj plans to expand retail operations for electric scooters to 30 cities next FY. Rakesh Sharma, the company’s executive director said "We plan to take Chetak to 30 new cities in FY22, but we will be closely monitoring how soon the supply chain stabilizes" |

PluginIndia's Take
Okay so in our episode of the PluginIndia show, we discussed how Rajiv Bajaj went to the media and said he was not happy with the current Shiv Sena state government. And he wanted to leave Maharashtra to setup a new factory. He also applauded the Aam Aadmi party of Delhi for their progressive EV policies.
Looks like the thinly veiled 'threat' via the media has worked wonders! The Shiv Sena government seems to have relented and has given Mr Rajiv what he needed.
Chetak staying in the state is good for the Maharashtra EV ecosystem too. Bengaluru seems to have many EV startups but Pune is giving a good fight.
Bengaluru has Ather, the recently announced Tesla RnD center, Ultraviolet, Simple Energy, Mahindra Electric RnD, Sun Mobility, Pravaig among others.
Pune has Tata Motors Electric, Bajaj Electric, Mahindra Electric EV component manufacturing, Kinetic Green, Felidae eBikes who are making all components in house, Tork Motors, KPIT, eAdicct among others. Strom Motors is also based out of Mumbai.
Bajaj Chetak is a large player and its fantastic news for the EV industry that they plan to sell electric scooters in 30 cities in 2021.
We look forward to more updates from Mr Rajiv Bajaj :)
