An understanding between Hero MotoCorp and Hero Electric means that Hero MotoCorp cannot sell any EVs with the Hero name. But Hero MotoCorp certainly plans to manufacture and sell its own electric two-wheelers. It's readying its debut product, an electric scooter, for launch by March 2022 – designed and developed at the company’s R&D center in Jaipur, Rajasthan, and has also has an agreement with Taiwanese company Gogoro for battery swapping technology.

A prototype of Hero's upcoming electric scooter was shown virtually in August 2021, this year as part of the company's 10th anniversary celebrations. From the photos, the scooter seems to have a mid-mounted motor and is expected to be a mass-market product priced around the Rs 1 lakh mark.

PluginIndia Take:
Well, this had to happen. Hero Electric, the EV trader company that is the market leader in electric scooters, wont allow its bigger brother - Hero MotoCorp to use the Hero name to sell EV's.
Vida - Spanish for life, is a nice name. Like OLA it is easy sounding and will be easy to remember. With the name registration done, we hope Hero Motocorp can launch their own EV's in 2022.
It is about time. All their pollution scooter competitors - Bajaj, TVS have an EV in their portfolio.
We are not sure if VIDA will launch electric scooters with those gogogro swap stations. Hero Motocorp has the resources to setup 1-2 battery swap stations in major cities all over India.
But as Hero Motocorp is part of the BIG ICE vehicle legacy manufacturers, we feel they may sell EV's only in few cities and wont be serious for another 3-4 years.
In Hero Motorcorp's ideal world, they would want to continue to sell pollution scooters in the near term - India's air pollution issues and oil import bills be damned. But the free market will give them a jolt to ensure they act. Startups like Ather, OLA are already eating into their market. Fleet operators are preferring EV's and will use lakhs of EV's in the coming years. If Hero Motocorp is not serious about EV's, they will be finished.
Interesting times ahead.
