Make in India - EV Powertrains and Components | Sona Comstar | ANAND Group

26/7/2021

In a big push towards making electric vehicle components in India, Sona Comstar ties up with Israel's IRP Systems to build EV Powertrains and ANAND Group teams up with South Korea's Mando Corp to produce and market EV Components. The fast growing EV Market is now looking to diversify and mitigate the risks.

Sona Comstar, a global automotive component manufacturer, has announced a collaboration with and Israel’s IRP Systems, a provider of electric powertrain solutions for e-mobility. They are working on a joint development project called the iCreate (International Centre for Entrepreneurship and Technology). They will invent a new powertrain, manufacture it and market it globally.

With an aim to deal with the import / export market, Sona Comstar states that the new powertrain will give them and IRP Systems a global competitive advantage, and targets substituting imports worth Rs 1,300 crore ($ 200 million)
This global project will be for Electric 2-wheeler, 3-wheelers and it will include:
  • Designing the prototype
  • Building Prototype
  • Manufacturing of a high-efficiency, low-cost, magnet-less powertrain (motor + controller)

‘iEV Powertrain’ project is about creating an innovative motor-plus-controller combination that does not use rare earth elements like neodymium, will offer high efficiency and low cost to manufacturers of electric two and three-wheelers by October 2021.

On the other hand,
Auto component maker ANAND Group on Tuesday said it has joined hands with South Korea's Mando Corporation to cater to the growing electric vehicles segment in the country. ANAND Mando eMobility Pvt Ltd, will manufacture and market the EV components for two and three-wheelers.

The manufacturing facility will be setup in Rajasthan over a capital investment of 50 crore and will employ 300-450 people. Mando Automotive India Co-Chairman Jaisal Singh stated, "ANAND Mando eMobility has the engineering capability and technological knowhow to service the growing demand for motor and controller components in India. We expect to achieve a turnover of Rs 500 crore by 2025."

PluginIndia's Take
So Israel based IRP Systems manufacturers advanced controller boards and software that integrates with any motor. They have very good software that offers configuration options and diagnostic tools. So looks like this JV with Sona Comstar will essentially be a RnD project for few years and we hope after that we may see production ready motor that does not use rare earth elements.

Anand group and Mando both are large component makers for the auto industry and Mando known as a major supplier of OEM rotating electricals to Hyundai & KIA. There is no information on the motors and controllers that will be developed by their JV.

So large component suppliers to ICE vehicle manufacturers have now realized that they they need to start making EV components to stay relevant in the coming decades as their ICE gravy train wont last forever. This investment in EV Component system will only benefit the Indian EV Industry.

This article makes my hair stand on end… Maybe they will unlock the power of gears… super long drive with a normal battery or maybe even very high power… rugged components that would work in the rough and tumble world of road vehicles…
