Tesla Inc is scouting properties for showrooms and service centers in India. The company plans to launch the Model 3 in the country by mid 2021. It will be imported to India and will compete with cars in the luxury segment.
The company wants to open showrooms in cities like New Delhi, Mumbai and Bengaluru. it has hired executives for finding properties of around 20,000 to 30,000 square feet.
Tesla has also recruited Manuj Khurana, a former executive of India's investment promotion body Invest India, in to lead its policy and business development efforts in the country according to some sources.
The PluginIndia team are in touch with Mr Manuj since 2018, but he declined to comment.
Also we Global property consultant CBRE Group Inc has been hired for surveying properties in the country which has been searching for places since several weeks . It has been focusing on finding places which will make it easier for attracting affluent customers for Tesla vehicles.
We wonder why that is?
The PluginIndia team was very excited, when we saw the name of Mr Manuj Khurana leading the Tesla India team. We knew Mr Manuj since 2018, from his days at Invest India group of the Ministry of Commerce & Industry. Mr Manuj has been working on electric mobility for many years and Tesla India seems to be in capable hands.
We hope to get updates from Mr Manuj and Tesla India soon and hopefully we can feature them in our channel.
Also it looks like the big 3 cities - Delhi, Mumbai and Bengaluru will have Tesla first. As we discussed with the Tesla Club of India folks, it looks like a Tesla Model 3 standard edition would cost more than Rs 50 lakh.
