RealLife Energy Independence

Real Life Energy Independence

Deepak H.G

Picture
Deepak lives in Bangalore and has installed the following clean energy systems at his residence
Rain Water Harvesting System
Solar Home Lighting System
Solar Cooker
Domestic Biogas Plant

Domestic Biogas Plant
Mission
  • Waste segregation.
  • Optimum use of biodegradable waste.
  • Minimize the use of LPG as cooking fuel.

System
At our home we use floating dome type biogas plant, designed and manufactured by Synod bio-sciences.
The total cost of the system was Rs. 22,500, including installation charges.
We started using biogas as cooking fuel from 03 July 2014.

The system consists of a floating dome bio digester, gas collector and the stove.
The biogas plant has been placed on the roof top since plenty of sunlight is ideal for biogas generation.
Picture
We feed kitchen waste, cow dung and garden waste, mixed with water, to the biogas plant. Every day we feed around ¼ kg to ½ kg of waste.
The quantity increases during festivals and special occasions.
Picture
Impact
  • Our daily usage of LPG was for 3 hrs. With the implementation of domestic biogas plant, we are able to use biogas for 1 hr 15 min to 1 hr 45 min per day thereby saving LPG by 50%.
  • Earlier we used to buy organic manure for our garden. Now we use the slurry, the outcome of the domestic biogas plant, as the manure.

Solar Cooker
Mission
  • Optimize utilization of solar energy.
  • Reduce dependency on LPG.

System
At our home we use parabolic Solar Cooker, designed and manufactured by Airier Natura Pvt. Ltd.
We started using solar cooker from 09 March 2013.
The total cost of the system was Rs. 6,830, including Rs. 500 towards installation charges.
The solar cooker has been placed on the roof top since there in no obstacle for Sun rays. The solar cooker has wheels for its easy movement.

We start using solar cooker from mid of October till mid of May OR whenever is a bright Sunlight. We use the pressure cooker made out of ionized material, as black materials absorb more heat. The solar cooker requires a direction change for every 45 min OR 1 hour, as the direction of the Sun changes.
Picture
The solar cooker is used extensively on weekends as we get more time to experiment.
Impact
We use solar cooker for:
  • Boiling milk and preparing coffee
  • Roasting chillies for chutney preparation
  • Making idly
  • Boiling vegetables, cereals and pulses
  • Preparing rice, sambar, rasam and kheer.

Solar Home Lighting System
Mission
  • Optimum utilisation of solar energy.
  • Reduce dependency on grid power supply.

System
The Solar Home Lighting System, at our home, is designed and implemented by Selco India Ltd.
We have provisioned the dedicated electrical lines for the solar lighting, since it runs on 12 volt DC (Direct Current) power.
The total cost of the system was Rs. 40,000.

Implementation
We implemented the system in 2 phases:
  • Phase 1
The system was installed on 25 December 2011. The system provides lighting for Living Room, Dining Hall and Kitchen.
  • Phase 2
The system was extended on 05 May 2012, lighting for rest of the house. The Solar Home Lighting system consists of a solar panel,
a charge controller, a battery and the lights.
Picture
Impact
  • Since last 2 years, none of the grid power supplied lights are switched ON.
  • Solar lights are more durable. In last 2 years we have not replaced any of the CFLs, tube light and LED lights.
  • We are a 4 member’s family. The minimum electricity bill we have paid is Rs. 325 and maximum Rs. 750, in last 2 years.

Rain Water Harvesting System
Mission
  • Optimum utilization of rain water.
  • Enable ground water level sustainability.
  • Reduce dependency on corporation water supply.

System

Our home has an open terrace of 1395 sq. ft. area and has a 6000 lt. capacity sump for water storage. The sump is a common storage for rain and corporation water.
We have used the ‘Rainy’ filter, designed and manufactured by Farmland Rainwater Harvesting System to filter the rain water.
Picture
Rain Water Filter
‘Rainy’ filter is fixed to the wall. The rain water pipe from the terrace is connected to the filter. The rain water along with dust particles enter the filter inlet perpendicularly, rotating along the periphery of the filter chamber. The rotating water flows through the filter, placed at the lower portion of the filter chamber, segregates the dirt and the clean water. The clean water flows through the outlet to the sump. The dirt particles are flushed out through the drain outlet.

Once the sump is full, the rain water flows out to recharge the adjacent bore well.
